Pengfei Dou, while a student with the Borders, Trade, and Immigration Institute won best paper at the International Joint Conference on Biometrics 2017. His paper, “Multi-View 3D Face Reconstruction with Deep Recurrent Neural Networks” focused on the improved accuracy and consistency of 3D face reconstruction using a very small set of images.

When Dou won the award, he was a research assistant with the Computational Biomedicine Laboratory at the University of Houston while pursuing his Ph.D. in computer science. The BTI Institute and CBL are both led by Ioannis Kakadiaris, Ph.D., the senior author and Ph.D. advisor.

Dou received his Bachelors of Engineering in automation and his Masters of Engineering in traffic information engineering and control from Beijing Jiaotong University, China.

Kakadiaris is a Hugh Roy and Lillie Cranz Cullen University Professor of Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Houston and the director of the BTI Institute.

The BTI Institute is a Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence led by the University of Houston. Dou’s work was sponsored by the DHS under grant award number 2015-ST-061-BSH001.
